Bangka Belitung | Archive

In November 2022, Indah Suci Safitri (a freelance journalist) and I sent a reporting proposal as young freelance journalists and received a grant from Earth Journalism Network, Internews.
We proposed a story about the future of children on an island known as part of the Southeast Asian tin belt- Bangka Belitung. The mining activities allegedly destroyed not only their future environment but also the social aspects- child labour, safety, education, and health. The children there were badly affected by massive tin mining extraction, but no action was made by the policymakers to reduce the effects.
After months of process, in June 2023, our project was officially published by Project Multatuli titled Mimpi Buruk Anak Penambang Timah dan Hancurnya Lingkungan Masa Depan di Bangka Belitung.
Throughout the project, I worked on the data and its visualization needed. I also took part in the writing, especially in the education and health section.
Below is the infographic I made for the project. It analyzed a small village in Bangka Belitung named Kampung Pasir. This village was mined and destroyed, yet, it was said that the village was actually intended for young families and their toddlers and children.
